Shri Satyendar Jain, Hon'ble Power Minister, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, during his visit today at Tata Power-DDL’s Battery Energy Storage System at Rohini, New Delhi, along with Shri Mohinder Goyal, MLA Rithala in the presence of Mr. Ganesh Srinivasan, CEO, Tata Power-DDL.
Tata Power-DDL on its journey to evolve into a Utility of the Future, has taken numerous initiatives for providing best-in-class services to its consumers. One such initiative has been the setting up South Asia’s largest grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in partnership with AES and Mitsubishi.
To understand the capability of BESS and to discuss the way forward to scale up usage for different applications, Shri Satyendar Jain, Hon'ble Power Minister, Government of NCT of Delhi, visited South Asia’s Largest Grid-Scale Battery Energy Storage System today, along with Shri Mohinder Goyal, MLA Rithala in the presence of Mr. Ganesh Srinivasan, CEO, Tata Power-DDL. Battery Energy Storage System is located at Tata Power-DDL’s sub-station in Rohini, New Delhi.
BESS was setup by to provide add system flexibility, grid stabilization, better peak load management, enhance reliability and protect critical facilities for 1.8 million consumers served by the company. It has a 10MW/10MWh capacity. The battery chemistry used in the plant is Lithium ion Battery-NMC (Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt Oxide) which has a faster ramp rate.
The Hon’ble Minister shared that with rapid growth of Rooftop Solar Power and increasing Electric Vehicles (based on the progressive EV policy of the Delhi Government), Battery Energy Storage is the need of the hour for Delhi. Tata Power-DDL’s BESS, which has a very fast ramp rate to charge or discharge its full power in a fraction of seconds, will be instrumental in stabilizing the grid.
The 10 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) can be utilized for the following innovative applications:
-
- Grid Stabilization
-
- Peak Load Management
-
- Overload Mitigation of Power Transformer
-
- Volt-Var Regulation
-
- Reactive Power Management
-
- CAPEX Deferral
-
- Frequency Regulation Ancillary Services
-
- Deviation Settlement Mechanism
-
- Life Enhancement of the Asset
All these applications are fully integrated with the Tata Power-DDL Power System Control Center and can be operated remotely without any manual intervention.
The Hon’ble Minister had a detailed discussion on the future plans and options for scaling-up Battery Storage and expressed his support for innovative projects to meet the needs of consumers of Delhi and appreciated the efforts of Tata Power-DDL. The Minister also shared that Delhi should target a large-scale aspiration, similar to the one taken by Singapore (200 MW by 2025) which will ensure that the consumers in Delhi benefit from improved reliability, lower cost green power in a cost-effective manner.
