Tips on Energy Usage

Computer and Laptops:

1. Turn off your home office equipment when not in use. A computer that runs 24 hours a day, uses more power than an energy-efficient refrigerator.

2. If your computer is required to be left on, turn off the monitor, this device alone uses more than half the system’s energy.

3. Keep computers and monitor in sleep-mode when not in use, this helps cut down energy costs by approximately 40%.

4. Battery charger for laptops, cell phones, digital cameras and alike, consume power whenever they are plugged in. Remove the plug when not is use and save energy.

5. Screen savers save computer screens, not energy. Shut down the computers when your task gets finished.

Lights and Bulbs:

6. One of the best energy saving devices is the switch. Switch off lights when not in use.

7. Clean your tube lights and lamps regularly for a better lighting experience and energy efficiency. Dirty lighting fixtures emit less light.

8. Use LEDs in place of incandescent lamps and save up to 75% of electricity for the same lighting level.

9. 90% of the energy consumed by an ordinary bulb (incandescent lamp) is given off as heat rather than visible light.

10. A 7-Watt LED bulb produces the same amount of light as a 15-Watt compact fluorescent bulb and a 60-Watt incandescent bulb.

Home Appliances:

11. Upto 18% of the energy can be saved by reducing the temperature setting of the water heater from 60 degrees to 50 degrees Celsius.

12. To help reduce heat loss, always insulate hot water pipes, especially where they run through unheated areas. Never insulate plastic pipes.

13. Use an electric Kettle to heat water, it’s more energy efficient than using an electric cook top element.

14. Iron your clothes and linen all in one go. Do not keep a hot iron which is switched on in an upright position for long period since more heat will be lost.

15. Don’t keep electrical appliances ‘ON’ in idle conditions.

16. Avoid storing hot / warm food in the refrigerator.

17. Use a low temperature setting on your washing machine and only wash full loads.

18. Switch to BEE 5 star rated energy efficient Air Conditioners/Geysers and other relevant appliances to save energy.

Surroundings:

19. Use of white and light colours for interior walls, ceilings, and curtains reflects more light with in the building and helps to reduce the energy cost.

20. Always make provisions for windows and doors at home or office space to allow natural light and avoid using electricity during day time.

21. Planting trees on the South and West will reflect natural light through the windows, resulting in less use of heating appliances like room heaters etc. in winters and would provide ample light.
